SUMMARY:Affordable Housing Virtual Town Hall with Supervisors Margaret Franklin and Kenny Boddye
DESCRIPTION:To Register: Click Here\n\nAffordable Housing – What is it? Why do we need it? How do we get there?\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event \n\n\n“Housing is the missing ingredient to our region’s prosperity\, and the smartest investment we could make is to add it back in.” \nPrince William is one of the few Northern Virginia jurisdictions to not have affordable housing policies or funding. Now\, as the County updates its Comprehensive and Strategic Plans\, Supervisors Franklin and Boddye invite you to join them in a town hall on this important topic. \nA Community Foundation study of housing in the DC Metro region found critical gaps in housing affordability across jurisdictions and income levels. This has real economic and quality of life consequences for the community as a whole. “Without stable housing\, it is difficult for people to obtain economic security\, a quality education\, good health and employment\,” said Terri Lee Freeman\, president of The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region. \nEven middle-income households working in fields such as education\, public safety and nursing can find themselves priced out of the market. It will take innovative policies and community collaboration to find a path forward. \nThe Supervisors will be joined by Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Housing Programs Manager Hillary Chapman\, PWC Community Development Director Rebecca Horner and PWC Planning Director Parag Agrawal. Together\, the panel will take a local lens to this regional challenge\, welcoming audience input via the Zoom chat. You can also submit your questions in advance during the registration process\, using the link below.

SUMMARY:Batestown Road Family Reunion
DESCRIPTION:Batestown is a predominantly African American community in eastern Prince William County that was founded in the 1820s. The community was one of only a handful of African American communities in Northern Virginia prior to the Civil War. After the Civil War\, Batestown grew in population as formerly enslaved people moved here. Soon it became known as the African American section of Dumfries. Mainly farmers\, some residents also worked at the nearby Pyrite Mine and Quantico Marine Corps Base. New work opportunities in the area drew new residents from throughout Virginia to Batestown\, with some families moving as far away as Richmond to Batestown. By the 20th century the community grew large enough to support a church and school. In the 1930s the Federal government threatened eminent domain if local landowners did not sell their land to create Prince William Forrest Park. Not all sections of Batestown were incorporated into the Park\, and the community still survives today. \n\n\n\n————————————————————————————————————————- \n\n\n\n\nTickets are limited. The orders of the Governor as well as the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) in effect at the time of the event will be followed related to COVID-19 guidelines for entrance and occupancy.\nDedication Program will be streamed live on Facebook via https://www.facebook.com/PotomacDistrict/\nFood Vendors available on-site – Z’s Southern Kitchen (zssouthernkitchen.com) & Jeremiah’s Kansas City Style Bar B Q (jeremiahskansascitystylebarbq.com)\n\n\n\n\nFor more details and questions: \n\n\n\npotomacdistrict@pwcgov.org \n\n\n\n703.792.4645 \n\n\n\nhttps://tinyurl.com/batestownrd \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n\n\n10:30 AM – 11:00 AM 30 minutesRegistration & Viewing of Batestown ArchivesMerchant Park Gazebo Stage\n11:00 AM – 12:00 PM 1 hourBatestown Road Renaming & Dedication Program – Special Guest SpeakersMerchant Park Gazebo

SUMMARY:A Special Truth\, Love and Grit Conversation with Dr. Ivonne Wallace Fuentes & Del. Sam Rasoul
DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends\,\n\nPlease join Delegate Sam Rasoul for Lt. Governor of VA & Dr. Ivonne Wallace Fuentes for a special Mother’s Day conversation on May 6\, 2021 at 7:30 PM ET to discuss the importance of revitalizing and restoring women in the workforce with the bold progressive policy proposed by Sam called the VA Marshall Plan for Moms. Women have been disproportionately impacted both emotionally and economically by the pandemic\, especially women of color. In 2020\, more than 2 million women left the labor force. Women are now at their lowest workforce-participation level since 1988.(1) Dr. Ivonne noted that when the pandemic hit and schools closed\, it became clear that our country relies on women as the fail-safe safety net. COVID has brought to light the inequities that exist for women in this country. For true economic recovery to happen\, we must take action now to revitalize and restore women in the workforce. Moms deserve more than flowers this Mother’s Day\, women deserve true economic justice. Please submit your questions to Katherine@sam4va.com – if you have a personal story of how this pandemic impacted you\, please contact Katherine White at 703-597-2047. Or you can also email me at Katherine@Sam4va.com. The event will also be streamed live on Facebook.\n\nThank you\,\nKatherine White\n\n\nMore Details: Click Here
